With how sewing machines are manufactured, it makes sense that they would be good at precision manufacturing

Fun fact: the Singer company had an office in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and the Singer Building is still considered one of the most beautiful in the city; it was given special permission from the Tsar to have a dome taller than the Winter Palace (located a couple blocks away). Today the Singer Building is home to the House of Books, a massive bookstore and cafe.

I have an old electric Singer that still runs and has zero slop in any of the parts. They are bulletproof marvels.

Makes perfect sense. They had the machines for small, intricate, and consistent parts. I could 100% see them being an effective manufacturer

Same reason why Remington made Typewriters. Extremely precise machining.

60's 70's they also made commercial AC/Heater units which were almost indestructible.

Back then, sewing machines and bomb sights were mechanical, requiring extremely precise machining during the manufacturing process.

Singer sewing machines are fucking immortal. My dad has his mom's antique first or second gen Singer pedal sewing machine table. It still works when we connect the belts to it.

My uncle was a Marine in the 90's. He was an armorer and RSO at Camp Pendleton at one point. He told me he had actually found one of those Singer 1911's in a presentation case with documentation inside. He knew what it was and reported it to his superiors. He never saw it again and found that it had later been removed from the armory's inventory.

My family has an heirloom Singer sewing machine the one with the foot pedal. It's beautiful with mother of pearl and it still works!

Until this century, maybe the 90s, I can't recall exactly right now, Singer was big on full metal working parts. This meant they could be repaired almost indefinitely, with the exception of things like getting tossed into another town by a tornado or hurricane, although I've hears of a few that survived that. Today, with the exception of the industrial machines and some of the high end embroidery machines and sergers (although definitely not all models!), they've switched to plastic working parts that fail easily, often in such a way that makes repairs difficult to impossible when they throw pieces. Knowing what you're buying is important, so double check the model number before thinking you've got a machine you'll pass down. And if you've got an old treadle model, know that adapters to make them electric still exist.

So yeah, when they made highly precise tiny metal gears, it makes perfect sense they did all manner of weapons manufacturing. Today? Their sewing machines are arguably weapons given how they can break and throw needles that puts people in the ER. Yes, I know more than one person who had this happen. New machines, not abused or incorrectly handled; just a crappy machine made to break down and require replacing instead of repairing.

The Singer 1911's that come up for sale were a test run to see how fast they could gear up and produce 500 of them, they were so well made even far beyond gun manufacturers at the time that it was decided they would make other more important precise equipment...those 1911's go for $250, 000 regularly at auction today, one sold in 2017 for $414, 000.
