People are still confused, so here is a lengthy and detailed explaination:

Old Man Zangetsu or Tensa Zangetsu is not Yhwach himself but merely the representation of Ichigo's Quincy powers.

What many don't understand, forgot or ignore however, is that Quincy powers are inherently and completely different from Shinigami powers because of their origins and natures.

'Shinigami' powers are natural to technically any relatively strong soul that is not a hollow or Quincy.

The Quincy race that we see during TYBW was created by Yhwach by sharing a small portion of his soul and power to those who would then later sire the quincy race as their biological ancestors. Those powers would develope in their offspring, making the number of Yhwach's Quincies grow.

Normally that would be it. More Quincies are born with the ability to learn how to use their Reiryoku with ambient Reishi, which Yhwach can then use Auswählen on to steal/reclaim power. There is no Inner World or manifestations of ones Soul involved with Quincy Powers unlike with Shinigami.

But because of who and what Ichigo is, his Quincy powers gained a certain level of autonomy from Ichigo and Yhwach. That autonomy caused Old Man Zangetsu to change his opinion on keeping Ichigo weak and away from his true potential to protect him. Remember that Old Man Zangetsu always suppressed White/ real Zangetsu, Ichigo's Shinigami/Hollow powers in order to protect Ichigo and keep him away from conflict so that he doesn't get hurt either physically or emotionally. It should be noted that, while Yhwach wanted that, Old Man Zangetsu didn't really know that besides subconsciously.

Old Man Zangetsu later realised that Ichigo's inherent nature was to shield others from harm even if it meant that he got hurt himself.

The only thing Old Man Zangetsu tricked Ichigo in was claiming he was Zangetsu, his Shinigami powers while White was only the Hollow power.

TLDR; it was no plot of Yhwach to use Old Man Zangetsu keep Ichigo away from the truth of his powers and nature/ancestry. That was the Old Man doing it himself with his original self pushing him subconsciously to a degree.

Most People never noticed how he literally said his name was yhawch early in the manga, the bubble was black and blurred out so we didn't know what he said. "My name is ____".

Meaning that ichibei probably did that to slow down yhawch's return. So then 'yhawch' told Ichigo he was zangetsu and it all began from there.
