Facebook executives Sheryl Sandberg and Mike Schroepfer took the Code Conference stage with Recode's Kara Swisher and Peter Kafka.

The CTO and COO of Facebook talked about how Facebook is continuing to deal with the fallout of Cambridge Analytica, how the company working on stopping fake news, and more.

Some actual tough questions: Why did Facebook fight ad transparency laws before the Cambridge Analytica scandal? Is Facebook making its product addictive by using psychological levers? Would you let your 13-year old child use Facebook? Do you use the default privacy settings? Facebook has said in the past that it's a great tool for political persuasion. Do you still believe this? What are the consequences of this being true? Do you have an example where the company prioritized user well being over growth? What is the goal of Messenger Kids? Can parents trust you with their kid's attention?

"Why no one got fired?" People got families to feed. This idea of firing people is an old theory used by traditional companies. You revise your mistakes, and you work on them. You don't fire and run away from people.

At 24:55 Schroepfer makes a very interesting comment. They are a small part of the ads business. Does that mean they see themselves more as an ad agency than a platform for connecting people?

I find it hilarious how Swisher and Kafka are accusing Congress of being dumb about tech while their own knowledge exists at the most superficial level (primarily cliches and jargon).

Their business model is rather genius: we'll make a platform that costs the user no money. So they'll call it "free." But then we'll make huge amounts of money by using their data in ways they don't understand and therefore won't care about. The only problem is Facebook ain't free.

The question nobody asks is about Facebook Audiences. Advertisers can upload lists to their ads accounts with emails and phone numbers. Then they can target their ads directly at us. So all they need to do is add us to a list and boom. So how do I get Facebook to remove my details from those lists, because in order to serve up those ads, Facebook knows those details because they have to use it in their systems. And I might not even be on Facebook, but if I’m on a list I am now inside Facebook’s data. Facebook now has that data to do with what they will!! Sheryl Sandberg is not telling the full truth and the promises come across as incongruent and inauthentic. It’s a shame because I know she’s been through a lot of tough stuff and she also referenced that (for pity I guess) when she asked if the interviewer had read her book. I have compassion for their suffering. Facebook has become a separate web eco-system, just like google and the strapline ‘don’t do evil’ very much applies to Facebook now. I predict we will have some more whistleblowers coming out in months to come.
