Spontaneous Combustion Phenomena of Distant Wood Pieces

After felling a large rotting maple tree, we set the trunk area on fire by placing kindling and medium size pieces in that area, then setting it on fire with a torch. After the fire was going strong we noticed several pieces - a good distance away - from the fire that were starting to smolder and burn. Wood between the fire and those pieces were not affected. The only thing the distant pieces had in common was that they were all rotted wood.
If anyone has had a similar situation and/or has a scientific explanation, please share it here.
