In this video, after listening to Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism, I attempted a 30 day digital detox challenge. Not as brutal as no phone at all but it was tough. Side effects of being a gen z kid with too much free time and internet access? A crippling phone/technology/social media addiction.

audiobooks and books mentioned in this video:
Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
The Defining Decade by Meg Jay
True Prep by Lisa Birnbach and Chip Kid
So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport
Lakewood by Megan Giddings

socials:

music:
Jessie by Space Mountain
Rainy Day by Henyao

the less you start using your phone, the more you realize others use theirs a lot and are missing out on real life. Especially for gen z, there is a normalization of spending hours a day on your phone (even before quarantine)

Earlier today I finished the audiobook of “How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy”, kind of related to this topic and it was one of the most intelligent and thought-provoking books I’ve read in a really long time. Definitely recommend it

I do something similar to this every few months, but I always end up crawling back to social media. I am a pretty solitary person, and if I don't go on social media there's a solid chance I won't see a single person the entire day. I end up becoming isolated and loney, so I go to my parasocial relationships and pretend I'm not alone. It's definitely a problem I should work on

Love this video. I’ve been feeling the same way for a while. 6 months ago, I deleted all social media. Everything - Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. All gone. At first my hands would absentmindedly open my phone and try and pull up the apps (so strange how engrained these habits were). This lasted a couple of weeks, but after, I felt liberated. I spent time doing things I really wanted - I took up running, writing, and reading. My mental health has improved soooo much. Sending love your way from London xx

I swear someone has to do a study on GEN Z adhd bc. I think we all have it. we were raised to always be doing something and to multitask and consume.

I feel like a good way to cure *phone addiction* is to _customize your phone_ so that social media is no longer at the forefront of your phone usage. plus when you make it aesthetic, you get to look at pretty colours/ pictures when you're aimlessly locking into your phone (basically you're going on a _scenic route_ ). Another tip is just to _change the cover of a social media app to a picture of something that's negative_ (like a cute bandaid/ pills) so that your brain will _naturally_ start associating social media with toxicity. I explained how it's helpful to make your phone experience more intentional in my video (that I literally posted today like what are the odds lmao) but yea ew to -phone addiction- . I'm tired of being controlled by a device but I would personally not be participating in digital minimalism lol. I've spent a year without a phone before and it was really eye-opening but it's just not that sustainable for me.

My phone broke the day before yesterday and while I was going a day without my phone I realized how I could be more productive AND more peaceful without it

if u guys have 10-12 hrs on ur phone a day and u can't handle a full digital detox yet, then i suggest using ur laptop as a substitute since u can't carry it everywhere ^_^. social media is harder to navigate here. once u do that for a week or two then start disconnecting from ur laptop as well.

I took a digital detox for a month last year. It was the most productive I've been since primary school😭💀 and then after a month and a few days I went back to my phone addiction. 🙂💔

Born in 94, don't have any social media unless you count this youtube account, and I do not envy Gen Z'ers. You can do this!
