The part of this rule that is unfair to the defense is that the disengagement count only resets if a runner advances. It should reset if they get the runner out as well.

Rickey Henderson had a .400 on base percentage. You're getting about 3.4 at bats a game give or take. So He's on base at least once a game. Thats 3 SBs a game give or take.

He would have had around 500 SBs If this rule was in effect in his prime.

Keep in mind this applies to Vince Coleman, Tim Raines, Lou Brock, Billy Hamilton, & Ty Cobb too.

If this had been the rule for the past 130 years that would most likely be at least 50 years with 350 plus stolen bases.

Meaning there would be guys with over 5, 000 stolen bases for their career numbers. Simply outstanding to think about. That's how much this changes the game.

I think they will modify what constitutes a pickoff after this season though. It was never intended to be abused in a way that would prevent throwing to a fielder by the pitcher if the runner does actually attempt a steal.
