As someone who went through this at one point, this reaction is 100% real. Your brain is grieving for a baby you thought you had.

A false pregnancy is absolutely devastating. My body actually changed. Finding out it was my hormones and my brain playing a prank on me broke my heart.

“Phantom pregnancy” would have been the better choice to avoid this response.

I know someone who went through this, she was devastated, she says she felt like she had gone mad. I feel terrible for any woman who has gone through a phantom pregnancy.

My mom had a false pregnancy like a year before she actually got pregnant with me. She told me about it once and honestly this woman’s reaction is fairly common. Most woman’s reactions to a false pregnancy is the same they would have if it were a miscarriage. It’s very emotional for them

If I remember correctly, they were trying for a baby for a while and then she got "pregnant." I can't imagine the grief she must've felt for something that never physically existed.

I knew a woman whose stomachs swollen up so big she was convinced she was 6 months pregnant .. and when the doctor told her her womb was empty she literally accused the hospital of stealing her baby and try to sue until they showed her ultrasounds of an empty womb and her swollen inflamed tissue! 😳

The thing about hysterical pregnancy is, it's more about the body making a false assumption and sending the hormones for a pregnancy instead of realizing there's nothing there.

We had a dog who was infertile that would often go through this, she would act pregnant and then choose a stuffed toy as her puppy. She'd nurse it, transfer it, clean it- It was quite sad and she was a sweet girl

The feeling of loss and grief when they are told is VERY real. Documented cases have women becoming traumatised in just the same manner as someone who loses a real pregnancy. It's heartbreaking.

My sister and I got pregnant for the 1st time and were carrying at the same time. Unfortunately hers was a “false pregnancy”. She wanted nothing to do with my son. She and I had been best friends and I wanted her in the delivery and when I had an emergency C-Section she had left to go to a bar instead of being in the OR. I’ve always carried hurt in my heart that’s turned to bitterness bc of it. This is the first time I had thought of it in these terms and I m writing my sister to apologize for not being more sensitive to her losing her “baby”. I knew she was grieving as if it was a true pregnancy and was mindful to step easy around it but I THOUGHT I was being sensitive by taking her into the OR instead of my momma and including her. I was just hurting her all along 😢 💔

I was actually pregnant but lost my son at 22 weeks. Tore me up, I cannot imagine having a false pregnancy. The anguish these women must feel, the devastation...😭

I think if she had used the term “false” instead of “hysterical, ” it might have at least prevented the husband from immediately putting up his hackles. “False” implies mistaken, “hysterical” implies insanity. Heck, even calling it a phantom pregnancy would potentially have gone down better, although I think the wife would have reacted badly no matter what the doctors said. Language can affect perceptions, Dr. Reece, you should have known that by now!

I had an Irish setter that experienced a false pregnancy. It was the weirdest damn thing. She was convinced she was having puppies so we gave her a toy and she nurtured and took care of it for months. She even started lactating. It was bizarre.

Phantom pregnancy... I've gone through it three times. Each time was caused by a fear of becoming pregnant. Finding out is... devastating. Your shows it's pregnant, from cravings to what feels like fetal movement. It's not a mental health issue, which is what "hysterical" entails. Sometimes wanting a baby so badly can cause it. Sometimes your brain just... does it. With as many miscarriages I've had, the grief that comes with the revelation is just as potent. The judgement that women face over this is terrible. I'm glad this show brought it up and clarified that it isn't a trick women pull.
