But never forget: Ransomware tries to encrypt *everything* it has access to. So after backup always remove whatever you use. So the ransomware can't encrypt your backup too.

They also have delayed-action ransomware that will sit on your computer a while before activating, which can make finding a clean back-up a bit of a pain.

When people pay those hackers, can't they be traced by the transaction?

I don't backup my data on my PC, cause it's 4Tb of games and I already own them lol.
Have fun locking my files when i can just wipe the drive and get it all back for free.

Just politely email the hackers and I'm sure they'll realise control back.

What if these files are very confidential, I don't want anyone to know what they are.
what if the hackers share files on the internet.

If I use an automated backup, will it backup the encrypted files and overwrite the unencrypted files?

Question: Is there ransomware on Mac OS X and Linux? (I mean probably, but I've never heard of anyone being infected other than on Windows)
