I Keep it old school, less variables makes the hobby much more enjoyable.

I ran the triton method for 4 years. Here are my thoughts...Refugiums or more realistically macro algae chambers have many drawbacks. They trap detritus, allow pests to proliferate, and take up valuable sump space. In a power outage, refugiums are just a liability. Aggressive macroalgaes can out compete corals for micro and macro nutrients and some species even release toxins into the water. Modern reef equipment can easily keep a tank healthy. I'm a big fan of auto fleece rollers, . Add a good protein skimmer and reactor and you're all set. If you still have high nutrients, look at your husbandry and fish stocking levels.

They are very necessary for easy reefing. Without a doubt the easiest nutrient stability and exporting option.

In my experience they bottom out your nitrate and compete with your coral for food. If you have super high nitrate go for it but I'd rather have coral to suck up nutrients than macros in my sump.

I have an idea for a 10 gallon nano tank with different types of macro algae and live rock, and a single mandarin dragonet to enjoy the copepods...

i can’t keep my nutrients up 2-0.01 i run a refuge with chaeto. light is on opposite schedule. if i was to fully remove the chaeto and just run the light would my nutrients be more stable? or would that open up a can of worms

Have you guys had any success putting macro algae in the first chamber of an AIO? Does it actually need any light to grow? I'm thinking about keeping some in mine as a mini-fuge.

Thomas quick question, I have a IM 10 that I made a Refugium with light and my algae Chaeto died, any ideas . I used the section where filter sock would go.

I have tried twice. My chaeto gets choked out by hair algae. All parameters in spec.

Excess nutrients? I can't keep mine up! I have to dose nitrates and phosphates, and feed 4 times a day just to keep them detectable. Refugiums are on the decline compared to a couple years back IMO.

Here is another question. Can it hurt? Is there a reason not to use one?
