Welcome to Deconstruction Gaming’s Guide to Gaming Terms. In this video we will explore the term Pre-Production. So what does Pre-Production mean? Pre-Production is the planning phase of game development.

At a high level, a game project will go through Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production. Pre-production is a design heavy phase where concepts, documentation, prototypes, and production plans are created. There are deliverables in this phase such as game design documents, technical design documents, art style guides, concept art, and game prototypes. Pre-production is used to move a game idea from a concept to a pitch, proof of concept for funding or to be greenlit for production. There are no set industry standards for Pre-Production although you will see common practices. The goal of Pre-Production is to prepare the project for full production.
