Dogs most definitely can be very smart. Our dog doesn't do this but it is nice to hear stories like these. Very heartwarming. My brother-in-law's gf has a newborn so I don't think sweet pea has quite figured out babies being a puppy herself.

I was a teenager when my fourth brother was added to the family. We had a Weimaraner/Boxer mix, named "Runt", who immediately fell in love with the baby. My Dad was 6 ft tall. Runt could stand on his hind legs and put his front paws on Dad's shoulders. Runt would put his head on my brother's stroller tray and the baby would proceed to bop him on the head and pull his ears. The dog was in heaven. He taught my brother how to walk. Runt would let him latch onto him and they would slowly make their way around the house or yard. Runt knew he had delicate cargo. Baby cried at night . . . before Mom could even roll over in bed, Runt was in her face. He had the look, "what is taking so long!"
