The reason your inventory got deleted from 1.8 > 1.7 is because in 1.8, Mojang switched from item numbers to item names. Item 1 becomes minecraft:stone, or 257 is minecraft:iron_pickaxe. So none of your 1.8 items exist in the game in 1.7, hence they are all gone.
