My uncle did the same thing as that dad and is serving a 15 year sentence right now. The only difference in the cases? He's Black.
Edit: he got extra time for stomping the guys head in. Wasn't like he didn't deserve it though. Also not to mention the guy was his best friend and even I came into contact with him as a young child.
This went on for 15 years until my uncle found out.
