Why France is declaring Josephine Baker a national hero - BBC News

France is honouring the US-born 20th Century singer and activist Josephine Baker with a place in the Pantheon on Tuesday.

She’s the first black woman to be remembered in the resting place of France’s national heroes, through her work on civil rights and for the Resistance during the Second World War.

She was one of a number of black artists that ended up in Europe in order to practice their art away from the racism in the u.s. of a. The Europeans and French, in particular had an appreciation for artistry that transcended obvious skin color. I am glad she has been honored.
