Verbs Like Gustar

This week's Spanish Quickie is a bit different. You'll still learn some vocab and grammar--it's just a little more theoretical than normal.

In order to understand why "me gusta" is so weird (it's how you say "I like"--not "gusto") -- you first have to understand how the dictionary works.

That might sound silly to you. But to be completely honest, I didn't know until very recently.

I wish somebody taught me this a long time ago. It woulda saved me tons of time, energy and embarassing moments.

But my pain, is your gain.

Let me know if you have any questions. This video took me longer than normal to make. I rewrote it three times!

It helps to think of "gustar" as the opposite of "disgustar, " or the English "to disgust." I've found it easy to remember because of the negative prefix. You don't disgust a piece of moldy bread, but the bread disgusts you, so you are disgusted by it. Basically all gustar is.

Dude. You totally nailed it! Even my MSc novia mexicana could not explain it as well as that!

Hi Jordan. I'm a Spanish teacher in rural north Florida. I love showing your videos to my class. It serves as a reinforcement of what I go over with them. I love your no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point approach. I know you didn't do well in high school, but I love how your journey to learning Spanish has transpired. It's very inspiring!

The absolute best description of gustar! I have searched high and low for the reasoning behind it's usage. Finally got it and now I get it!

I cannot tell you how long it has been that I have been looking for a proper explanation for the use of Gustar. Right after you explain it to mean "to be pleasing to" it all clicked at 5:13 where I stopped the video and began slow clapping that I FINALLY understand how to tell a girl "Me gustas" = You're pleasing to me; and not have my brain in a tangled mess. Gracias Jordan! Muchísimas gracias mi querido amigo!!

Thank god this saved me from having to ask my teacher what to do, just to hear "You should have been listening in class!"

I am on my second online college Spanish course. The teachers are not terribly supportive, and the text is often really confusing. I honestly don't know how I would've made it this far with out your help. Seeing your face is a relief. Thank you!

OK so right here, you place yourself head and shoulders above so many others, because you got to the bottom of the dictionary fallacy. Superb. A cool tranquil pond of clear thinking in a frantic world of clumsy non-functional approximations. Thank you so much!

Speed is a scalar quantity with just magnitude. Velocity is a vector with both a magnitude and direction.

I am so happy I happened upon your videos this morning. If I could have stayed home from work, I would have listened to you all day. But as it was, I listened to about 4 hours of your videos and figured out so many things that had been lost to me. I am traveling to Peru in 7 months to teach how to crochet in a community center. If only you had a video about ganchillo. You are a remarkable teacher. Thanks for sharing your skills.

about 4 years ago i firstly became contact with spanish and met this barrier... and never understood those indirect direct object pronouns... especially this word gustar.
but today is the day that i clearly understood this concept and completely get rid of this barrier
sincerely appreciating your great video!

Helpful video!

Velocity is speed in a direction so it is relative to a position and so it can be a negative value. Speed is the absolute value of velocity. It is speed without a direction and so it is always positive. Both are a rate of distance traveled over a period of time.

your videos are the only thing that makes sense to me. I'm in an intensive first year course in university for spanish, we learn over 30 new words a week and it's quite daunting then I found your videos and it really brings the theory clarity!

Just FYI, the difference between speed and velocity in English is that speed is a scalar quantity while velocity is a vector. That means is that velocity can be negative, but speed cannot. There is a little more to it than that but that but that should suffice for a YouTube comment.
