I ride alone... to get away from people... This just confirms that group rides are not for me :)

As a hiker more than a mountain biker, it is appreciated when a bike has a cowbell/jingle bells to alert me of them nearby. Unfortunately, hub noise isn't often as loud as people think it is and had a few close calls going around switchbacks. And if you're in front, letting the hiker know how many are in your group also helps navigate or wait at narrow sections of trail.

I'm a "loner"...but I found this video informative and funny...your humorous presentation makes ALL the difference. New subscriber!

I would say "if you don't have experience in riding in a group, tell the group about it before the ride" and listen them what they says.
During my first group ride I made several mistakes, but more experienced members were correcting me each time and at the end it was a nice time for everyone.

Forty-five years since last group ride, this was a reminder why!

A monotone on your left is far better than the bell, had to quit using the bells because I kept getting people who startle way to easily, darting all over the path, every which way for no reason, and also learned to slow down a little when coming up on other people just to avoid any over reactions they might have. The level of random stupidity of people with, dogs, kids, and cell phones is amazing.

Riding in Spain recently a cyclist wanting to overtake from behind said ‘beep beep’. I thought this was brilliant. It sounded friendly and didn’t scare the shit out of me. I now do it all the time and find that peoples’ reactions much friendlier.

I haven't broken any of these rules - only because I generally ride alone, mainly because of the types of people who you've described!😂
One thing that's a problem are walkers or riders (horse and bikes) who have ear things in and are listening to their own world. You ring your bell, honk your horn, call out, yell, swear profanities = no response, and when you do eventually find a spot where you can safely pass wide they walk right infront of you without looking!

When I pass pedestrians, and especially dogs, on the trail, I always slow way down to a normal human walking/jogging pace until I pass them. I’ve tried the announcing myself thing, but I don’t like yelling, people tend to be wearing headphones anyway, and I’ve gotten a lot better reactions from people when I can politely say “good morning” as they notice me. ✌️💜

Very thankful for the polite crew that I ride with. Solo rides are great, but I do love the camaraderie (and speed) of a good group ride.

Great video. One correction - “half-wheeling” is a different sin that what was described. The video shows “overlapping wheels”, which is a no-no in most non-hammering group rides. Half-wheeling is when the person next to you rides 1/2 wheel ahead of you. And when you speed up to get even, the person speeds up to stay 1/2 wheel ahead. Until you are both at VO2 Max. Still, love the content and the channel.

As a ride leader, when someone (or a few) people ride off the front but miss a turn, we don't say anything. Let them figure it out.

I'm the guy who's falling off the back, and telling people "go on without me" 😂
I'm also the guy who always brings extra snacks

I quit riding with others because: 1) hard to match my style and/speed with others, 2) too many "I'll be 30 minutes late." or "I'm out...not feeling it." 3) someone wants to get into a political discussion, 4) once I've committed to a ride, I lose flexibility about when to start or whether to go at all.

For your first rule, there is a solution that wouldn't make anyone angry. If you feel strong and you want to get in some intervals, just drop off the back and then race back up. Rinse and repeat until you have it out of your system. Nobody gets dropped and nobody is judging you for bad behavior.

Loved this video! Thank you so much. I don't do a lot of long rides at the moment - just commute about 10 miles a day, but the "on your left" or a bell used when passing is so very appreciated. When it happens on the road, I want to jump off and give you a hug . . well maybe a fist bump. And dear e-bike riders, please take note of these helpful words of wisdom. We're all in this together, after all. Cheers.

I haven't been here for a while and I'd forgotten what a really high quality product you're putting out. Thank you man. I guess I'll spend the afternoon back cataloguing, seems like solid a plan.

Good advice all around. I finally started to use a bell and actually had someone say thanks last week. It seems to be working better than 'on your left' as som people will turn left then move left. Maybe it should be 'stay. right'.

I'm new to cycling, I'm starting my 2nd season and I wish I seen this before, so fare so good I have not really pissed anyone off and I did over hear a cyclist in the club explain to a rider behind me about half wheeling as simple as this vid is, its a really good one and as usual you delivery is very entertaining, Cheers thanks Karl
