Man, growing up as a chubby shy kid was rough at school. You'd think home would be a safe place, but for me it was just as bad because my parents would call me names and offend me for being overweight. I still remember the day I finally broke down in front of them when I asked for more ice cream and my alcoholic dad just went off on me. It took me a lot of work and time to rebuild my confidence, but I finally feel happy being the person I am. I'm beginning to love myself.

It was the first thing out of your mouth. My father wanted me to go to law school and I wanted to do 2 master's degrees and then a Ph.D. My father said he'd take my medical insurance away from me. I studied for the LAST and I couldn't reach higher then 147 which is about 4 points too low at the time. Law schools were asking for 151 as the bottom number on the LSAT. Then when I got ready for my Ph.D. program my GRE score was too low for a fellowship which means I would have to pay for it. Too expensive, so I grabbed my tools and went to work as a painter and then I became PM for the paint company. Then I tried a business and failed, but not miserably. I learned enough by this point to take a job as a Construction Superintendent and this worked wonderfully. I have 30 years of experience now. I'm licensed with NYC Department of Buildings. My father was trying to steer me away from construction to law and I was headed right back there anyway. Hahahahahaha... Good thing I never took my father very seriously. I knew he was a BS'r and full of malarkey. He was a huge brute so everyone else took him very seriously, but not me. Never. It was a different relationship. I had to hold back laughter when my father said "I'll take your medical insurance away". 🤣

It's the worst thing because the child thinks they have to live up to the expectations but the parent doesnt understand they are most likely not going to be interested in things their forcing their child to do

Scrolling in my feeds, this one is a favorite! Thank you so much. I couldn’t agree more and this is how I raised my daughter so far 😊she’s currently 16, a beautiful, artistic soul. I just want her to live her life-purpose, creating her own destiny and blossom in her full potential, 🌸 I want her taking pride in her own work, sharing with the world.
We have some similarities, but she is so much her own❣️ I encourage and celebrate our differences 🎉

True and honest encouragement is the best thing. If you were to simply state that they have to be or do one thing is unconsciously damaging, but for true and honest encouragement to work, one would have to study the child’s strengths and weaknesses to base it from that

First step, moving out of poverty, next generation is pushed to achieve material & social goal, THEN the next step/ next generation is developing a capable and creative approach to filling their own life with their unique abilities and talents. Becoming a version of themselves, so truthful, noone else can ever tell them how to become what they will, for noone has done what they will do, noonehas become what they will become. I think this third step is what so many individuals struggle to achieve these days, for there is no blueprint yet, it is so difficult, because all the drive has to be found within. That is the struggle and the incredible opportunity to live in an authenticity, unmatched by previous generations.

Same with me! My mother wanted a different life for me according to her beliefs, tradition or what other kids are doing! Later in life she understood what my passions are and what I want to be in life! What I learned from this is that when I will have kids, I will support them and encourage them for the path they chose!

Actually no, parents should tell their kids that they should either be a doctor or a lawyer, if they cant be a beauty queen or actress.

This is the first time I disagree with your opinion. I wish my parents insisted more so I would listen to them more.

I don't agree. Many young adults have this freedom and do nothing productive. Reality is you need to be able to make a living and take care of yourself. Children need guidance. Otherwise they end up as lost adults most of the time.
