H1MIN: MARK9 DEPTH CHARGE

The U.S. Navy Mark 9 Depth Charge was an interesting design that enabled to reach greater depths quickly to harass and kill enemy submarines. The hydrostatic pistol's design was also essential for detonation at the appropriate depth.

Torpedo Man 1st class retired. In April 1973 I attended a class that included depth charges. There was one real reason that a ship captain might want Mark 6 depth charges. Because Mk6 sank slower they would be slightly safer for the ship at shallow depths. At 50 and 75 feet the ship needed to be going at flank speed to be safe from their own depth charges when the charges were dropped off the stern.
At speeds above about 12-15 knots (13-16 mph) sonar started to degrade and it takes time to get up to speed and back down. The time slowing down wasn’t so much of a problem because the explosions messed with sonar for a measurable period of time, however the sub captain could use the time the ship was speeding up and was deaf to dodge.

I'm guessing the Mark 6 was the most manufactured because it was the most cheapest to produce.

A US Navy warship encountered a Kreigsmarine U-boat on the surface in the Gulf of Mexico and began a depth charge attack as the U-boat crash dived. A Mark 6 depth change landed on the open deck of U-boat and simply rode it down to the preset detonation depth.

There was also an acoustic proximity fuze for the depth charges. Rather than detonating at a set depth, they detonated when passing or approacing the sub hull.
