Harry Nilsson-'Gotta Get Up' (BBC-1971) (2/7)

Harry's 2nd number from his wonderful BBC television special from 1971. "Gotta Get Up" is the opening number from his smash album from that same year, "Nilsson Schmilsson," and was one of many songs he wrote about starting a new day after a late night, a subject which he apparently knew a lot about.

The most gifted train wreck in the body of music from 1965 until 1980. That's our Harry.

For any Harry Nilsson fans I highly recommend the documentary on him called “Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talking About Him)”. Interviewed a bunch of his friends, from Jimmy Webb to Robin Williams to Yoko Ono and also his widow, and his former wife and 7 kids. You can’t stop watching from the first few minutes.

Oh God, Nilsson could run circles around the musicians of today.

Nilsson is a vastly underappreciated genius. "Nilsson Schmilsson" is a total work of art. I loved how "Russian Doll" used this song. "Jump Into The Fire" is still used for background music in commercials in the 2020's. Of course his version of Badfinger's "Without You" is great. Remember he also wrote Three Dog Night's hit "One."

How many artists could pull this off? His piano arrangement is clear and distinct and his voice, just as wonderful an instrument. Slowed down just a little from the studio version, it's just a joy to listen to. We miss you Harry.

An amazing voice, no backup dancers, or singers, or even added technology. Just a man and his talent. ⚘️

Thanks Russian Doll for this great track. I couldn’t believe it was Nilsson, all I have heard him sing was the classic “without you”. Now I have to explore his catalogue, one hit might be a fluke but two isn’t, there’s obviously.a talent here I missed out on.

Loved this BBC programme way back when, so I am eternally grateful that it remains universally avalable via the internet. England, November, 2023.

This song is a landmark of the edge of sanity. You can gaze beyond it, you can even cross past it briefly, but don't stall, don't stray too far past the line, lest you get lost on the other side.

nearly fifty years later the song still applies
