The EU is largely financed by its member states since the national contributions represent 85% of the whole budget.

But this situation does not conform to the wishes of the founding fathers of Europe. Historically, the European budget was based on its own resources, but everything changed in the last decades.

This week, the question of how better fund Europe was highlighted in the European Parliament.

Mario Monti, former Italian prime minister and chair of a “High Level Group on Own Resources”, came to Brussels to discuss the issue about reforming the EU’s own resources system.

Interviewees;
- Jean Arthuis, member of European Parliament (Liberals, ALDE)
- Mario Monti, Chair of the High Level Group on Own Resources, Italian economist, Prime Minister of Italy from 2011 to 2013, European Commissioner from 1995 to 2004
