Please learn from my mistake I had a severe accident last thanksgiving that put me in a coma for 3 months. I wasn’t wearing my helmet and shattered my skull and jawbone. I usually ride with my helmet all the time, why I wasn’t that day, I have no idea.

Just about 2 months ago I wrecked my motorcycle from fishtailing hitting my rear brake too hard and slamming into a guardrail at about 45mph. I flew 20 feet into a ditch and hit my head pretty hard. I couldn't see or walk for about 2 minutes, even then had I not been wearing a helmet I would have died or came pretty close to dying. That experience only reinforces the fact to wear a helmet and some decent gear at the very least. I'm glad I did and my family is too.

Ironically one of my buddies dad decided to wear a helmet for once one night and he hit a curb on a blind corner and landed on his head and the bike on him. The doctors said he's only alive because of his helmet. The dad blames the helmet for the accident saying if the helmet didn't make it hard for him to see he could have seen the curb. The mental gymnastics to not be wrong about the importance of helmets.

I'll admit, when I first started riding wearing a helmet did hurt my neck a bit; I had a sore neck for the first few weeks. But after a while, it just went away... hit the gym and strengthen them shoulders boys and girls. Maybe it was psychosomatic, maybe it wasn't... either way exercise... it's good for you.

Interestingly, Australia has compulsory helmet laws but you can get a medical exemption in some cases. In the last two years I have only seen one person that exercised that loophole. I guess it is just not worth the shit. You get pulled over, have to show your exemption, the officer goes back to the car to consult with a sergeant and you lose 15 minutes. ten minutes later you get spotted by another cop, rinse and repeat. There is an event exception for funerals and parades also.

Im from Europe and it blows my mind that we're in 2023 and in the US you can ride without a helmet. I have an AGV K5, it's nothing special but a very good helmet, it's very lightweight and loads of ventilation and very comfortable. It's an excuse not to wear a modern helmet. Mine cost €350 so its not gonna break the bank, and still compared to your life it's priceless. Ride safe buddies, love from Malta 🇲🇹 ❤️.

If you don’t wear a helmet, then your insurance company shouldn’t have to pay for treatment of injuries that would have been prevented by wearing said helmet.
