Hmmmm.... I would think that you could use a mesh bag and let in sit in a bucket / trash can for a day and would end up with the same result. Especially if you use hot water....

How are these bags different from the $1 Store meshed laundry bags; are their ties much more secure?

Stack the papers in a plastic tub, fill with water, let sit for an hour, pour out inky water, let dry overnight. Next day it'll be a brick of moldy unreadable paper. Toss in trash.
Bonus: Water is very destructive to computers and cell phones too.

Might use a dollar laundry bag to soak and dry the wet paper for my compost bin browns

This is a great idea - to let water break it down. I think I'll do something like this instead of buying a paper shredder.

That can't be good for the washing machine?  Has anyone tried this?  I would be interested in trying this!

That is stupid. Some of the pulp will wash through and plug the filter the washing machine pump. Dumb dumb dumb.
