Good content, man. Glad I found this channel, and I’m surprised you don’t have more subscribers. I know m talking about books isn’t the most popular YouTube genre, but make sure you’re using all the SEO tools at your disposal. Just adding a little bit of clickbait to your thumbnails and descriptions would help a lot. I work for a semi-successful YouTube/social media space, and although we have budget to advertise and boost certain content, we have a lot of organic growth because we take advantage of the system in place. This channel deserves 100k subscribers at least, so make sure you’re doing all you can to get your name out there!

As a single father - raising my son alone - reading Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' left an indelible mark. He cut straight to my fears of failing as a father - of the determination at any cost to ensure the survival of my boy. Few books have affected me in this way. I've seen 'Blood Meridian' suggested on many lists but part of me is afraid to read it - because I know how adept he is at immersing you in his characters and ravaging you emotionally/psychologically.

Do keep in mind Marx wrote at a time when child labour was considered normal and the working class was basically enslaved to the bourgeoisie. The reason to revolt was not simply because someone else has more: it's because the ruling class had more on the backs of the working class, in quite literal sense. Modern day forms exist too: you just need to look at an Amazon warehouse or a factory in China or Bangladesh.
I think a good companion to supplement is das Kapital but it is a more challenging and technical read (particularly the parts on economics).

Man, I'm really digging Dostoevsky nowadays. It's like he can penetrate your soul and mirror it among his characters: the idiot, the evil, the children, the morally struggling, the insane, the hopeful, the hopeless, the list could go on... Please do more Dostoevsky. 🥹

I read the Communist Manifesto when I was a young Pentecostal preacher and loved it. I came up with a sermon called, The Manifesto of the Holy Conspiracy, based on it. I'm an atheist now and not a Marxist, but I still remember how interesting it was to get outside my Pentecostal bubble and discover stimulating literature outside the Christian tradition.

The Judge to me is the personification of war, and/or the personification of evil. He is a horrific character, but humans are a horrific creature. You can’t speak of human nature without including evil. “He never sleeps, he says. He says he’ll never die…he is a great favorite, the Judge…His feet are light and nimble. He never sleeps. He says that he will never die. He dances in light and in shadow and he is a great favorite. He never sleeps, the Judge. He is dancing, dancing. He says that he will never die.” Blood Meridian reminded me of The Iliad, which of course is the first book in human history: and it’s all about war.

Great video! I hope this new year you read The Death of Ivan Ilych and Other Stories by Tolstoy. The Pevear & Volokhonsky translation is excellent and these stories seem right up your alley.

I felt the same with The communist Manifesto. It felt like a tantrum to me, like the envy and anger took over and their response and plan was to switch around the control and power.

Enjoyed your picks, placing the Wilberforce next to Marx made me smile. The Partially Examined Life podcast did some episodes on Blood Meridian a few weeks back which are worth a listen.

Three of the best books released in 2022 which may be of interest: The Psychology of Totalitarianism by Mattias Desmet, Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters by Steven E. Koonin, and Against the Tide: The best of Roger Scruton's columns, commentaries and criticism by Roger Scruton. There are good interviews with Desmet and Koonin on the Darkhorse and Skeptic YouTube channels respectively. Scruton passed away a couple of years ago, however Against the Tide is an excellent introduction to his work; one of the best philosophers of the last century.

Also, I’m pretty well convinced that Blood Meridian is modern take on the book of Judges. Ton of crossover.
