Pentax K-1 Full Frame DSLR! Holy S***!

The Pentax K-1 is the often rumored, long desired, oh my god it’s really actually for realsies really here Pentax full frame DSLR camera.

It’s got a 36.2 megapixel Sony sensor, with no AA filter.

It is the first ever full frame DSLR with 5 axis in body image stabilization, which is rated for 5 stops, and it uses that sensor stabilization system to do some cool things.

The first is the AA filter simulator.

Second is the ultra high color resolution images with Pentax’s multi shot pixel shift resolution mode.

And with the built in GPS you can also use the astrotracer function, which moves the sensor with the earth’s rotation to eliminate star trails when taking photos of the night sky.

Ricoh also finally increased the flash sync speed, going up from 1/180 to a sync speed of 1/200.

And the K-1 has built in wi-fi.

Being a K mount camera, you can use any and all existing K mount lenses including the new 15-30mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses, all legacy manual focus K mount lenses, and all of Pentax’s existing DA lenses for their APS-C DSLRs.

When using the DA lenses, the K-1 will shoot in crop mode with a resolution of 15 megapixels.

The ISO ranges from 100 to 204,800

It’s got a fully and uniquely articulating LCD screen that you can pull and twist out just about any which way you please, and as a Pentax it’s built like a tank with loads of weather sealing.

It shoots 4.4 frames per second for up to 17 RAW photos in full frame burst mode.

If you’re shooting in crop mode that jumps up to 6.5 frames per second for up to 50 RAW photos.,

It has 33 auto focus points, 25 of which are cross type, shoots 1080p video up to 30 frames per second, and sells for $1800.

As usual, Ricoh has created an incredibly capable camera and priced at an incredibly reasonable price.

Nice simple no-nonsense video on the K1. Makes a buying decision so much easier to make. Camera looks good to me. I want one! Thanks.

I thought you may be excited. It really is a killer camera for the price and I think Pentax were spot on with the features and add some new touches like the assists lights. The fact that all my and any Pentax lens will work is really awesome.

Great review by the way.

I chatted with you when I made the leap to the K-3...great great camera. I took some damn photos today of an old tractor covered with freshly falling snow (thanks for the WR Ricoh). Now I doubt I'll spring for a K-1 right now (only have 2 DA primes). But thanks for another great opinion. I'll check back when you get one in your hands. All previews I've read/watched have been VERY positive. This is a sweet Pentax. Pentax FTW!

Love my Pentax camera's as much as that epic beard of yours! :-) I can't afford it, but I'm so excited about the K-1!

Pentax did good with the K1. Pretty much pitched perfectly price wise/ features wise against the competition. They could have gone either way by producing a cheap under specified or expensive got everything camera but they considered the aspects that are most important to photographers first and foremost ( video is clearly behind the times but who cares?) I think this will sell well and open up a greater range of full frame models from Pentax in the future.

I've been singing the praises of Pentax since buying into the brand with my purchase of a K-3 a few years ago. Sounds like another winner, even though it seems like there isn't a huge range of choice in as far as available glass right out of the gate.

Thanks for this preview of what looks to be a seriously good camera Spiros. I have one on pre-order, so hopefully as soon as they hit our shores down Under I can start doing some tests and my own little reviews.

I'm really looking forward to mounting the 3 Amigo's* on this body to see if the wonderful rendering of those lenses i see on the K-* series of crop sensors translates well to the 35mm sensor format.

* for those that don't follow Pentax closely the FA ltd 31mm, 43mm and 77 mm are known variously as the 3 amigo's or the 3 princesses. Some of the best glass ever made by anyone.

I have a Mark II. Absolutely love it for what I do. Big upgrade from the K3

All the Pentax digital cameras will take all the Pentax film lenses since the dawn of time; the only hitch is that as far as we can tell, the K1's mount is still what the Pentaxians call "crippled" (no aperture coupling for manual lenses) - so metering with K and M series lenses has to be done with the stop-down green button and the Takumars still need an M42/K adapter. But that's a trifling handicap. I'm getting one as soon as I've worked my current Pentax DSLR to death.

Love my K-50, interested in stepping up to a more high end Pentax for myself someday, this has definitely caught my attention....   for now though... can't wait to try out the 50mm lens.I enjoy your channel and now I have a question.   We are researching for an upcoming birthday,   and would like to get a digital camera for a 13, soon to be 14 year old girl who is interested in learning about photography.  Please give some recommendations of cameras that would allow control of things like aperture and shutter speed, with a decently fast lens, ranging in price from $200-400 USD.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Maybe even doing a video on the subject of "what to get your teen, family member,  or significant other,   who is interested in photography"    Thanks for the channel!

Hello Pentax,

Love Pentax !!!
I just find amazing that once you use a Pentax camera, you just "stay" with Pentax... Saw my Dad using a Spotmatic F, a Pentax K2 then a Ricoh XR-7. Now this is my turn with a K3. Pentax was an obvious choice for me.
Great ergonomy, compact, tough as hell and... different from the mainstream.

The K1 looks great, you will need to have "some experience" in photography to fully using it. I'm just surprise of the 4.4 shots... kinda average. Also, a 2.0 usb compare to the 3.0 on the K3, this is not big deal but surprising

Hope you get one later on to post a review and feelings about this new Pentax

Have a great day Spyros

how rugged do you people think this camera will be?? A friend of mine got his olympus omd em10 bumped a bit and the IBIS was dislocated and the camera is now in the service. Do you think cameras with in body stabilization are less rugged due to the sensor kinda hanging in the air with these motors?? Any ideas? Should i invest in a camera without IBIS just because of that? I got a sony a5100 and i've dropped it several times on gravel and cement and still rocks. I kinda have slippy hands so any tips on that?

A little correction. For the DA lenses, since some of them (like the DA50, DA35 for example) are covering FF the user is able to chose if he/she wants to use the crop mode or not.

Thinking that I might stick with cropped sensor bodys, like the K-3 (MK1 or MK2), but I will have at least a year to look into this.  I have yet to invest a lot into lenses for the K-50 so I may go with this one when I upgrade if lens choices are appealing a year or so down the road.  I like my K-50 a lot and this is just a hobby at this point...
