I'm pretty sure they were toying around with veterans hinting Volo was Cynthia's ancestor until they introduced Cognita. They are both her ancestors, and she inherited Volo's thirst for strength and Cognita's curiosity over myths and legends. It is truly a nice way to make 2 characters out of one

The ancient poem is implied to be written by Cogita. And the poem talked about the aiding the ancient hero and losing friends to the passage of time. So Cogita might be immortal and ancestor of Volo and Cynthia

For the comments: Sure Cynthia has her weak points but remember we were fighting Cynthia blind so fighting her was a nightmare. Cynthia has Bulky tanks meanwhile still doing decent damage, and Cynthia Garchomp 💀. And sure it gets countered by ice types but Lucario and Milotic wear your ice type down and if you ice type dies it was nearly Impossible to beat Garchomp

Conclusion: Cynthia has a counter sure but we didnt know what to expect when we first faught her and even if you still use the counter Team she's still a difficult opponent

I thought the most popular theory was that Volo is a farther ancestor of BOTH Cynthia and Cogito. Since the way he dresses for the final battle and the way he talked sometimes made him seem like he traveled FORWARD in time, unlike the player who gets sent back in time.

Obviously, the most logical explanation is that Cogita saw how ✨extra✨Volo was, and immediately thought “I can fix him”

Also, because of beni's battle just before the legendary encounter, we now know that wally is from a line of ninjas.

Another theory I saw is that Volo is actually Cogita's ancestor sent to the "future" to Hisui. Some hints are how he's the only one that know of Giratina and Arceus, and his original clothing being a lot more "ancient" looking.

More likely Cogita was actually from the period in which Legends Arceus takes place and Volo is the one that doesn't belong since he's the one who's so obsessed with Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. He probably time traveled like the protagonist. I think something in the game mentions him time travelling but I'm not sure.
