The 21-Gun Salute is usually given at military funerals. It's a political song, but portrayed through a romance. 21st Century Breakdown is a rock opera concept album about two characters named Christian and Gloria. Very riveting. I prefer the album before, American Idiot. There's a great song called Give Me Novacaine on it that's about duality.

So the first time I heard this song was in the musical American Idiot. Which is a musical made up of only Green Day songs. It follows 3 guys as they are trying to start their lives. First guy gets his girlfriend pregnant and has to try to make that relationship work. Second guy joins the military and ends up losing a leg. This song plays while they show him fighting and in the hospital. And the third guy becomes addicted to drugs

The chorus style is pretty "trade-mark" Green Day. Harmonies and chords are very familiar. 21 gun salutes are performed at military funerals. Maybe about PTSD? Expecting not to survive and then having to readjust to "normality"?
