Rwanda: The Don'ts of Visiting Rwanda

Rwanda is so much more than gorillas in the mist or the legacy of the genocide from 1994. It is one of the most incredible countries you can visit in the world, with engaging people, incredible nature, and a way of showing guests the best of their country. This is what tourists should not do when they visit Rwanda. From not bringing plastic bags, to not asking about what group a Rwandan belongs to there are some important tourists don'ts to know before you visit Rwanda.

Some of Our Favorite Travel Videos We Think Other Travelers Would Love

Our Travel Gear:
Microsoft Surface, Travel Laptop: We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

Camera Sony Alpha Series: We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

Western Dynamics 4 TB external hard drive. This let's you save your pictures and videos from your SD cards while you travel without having to use a computer.

Manfrotto Tripods: We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Our Packs/Luggage: Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

No plastic bags? No littering? Cleaning up the streets and taking care of nature and the community? WOW the whole world needs to learn a lesson from Rwanda! This is truly fantastic to see.

I'm a Rwandan who lives in the US. You'd be surprised how many people have asked me if I'm hutu or tutsi. It's such an uncomfortable and inappropriate question, so thank you for this!

This is one of the most respectful tourist videos I've seen by a foreigner traveling in Africa. I can see the care, consideration, sensitivity, and respect you came with while engaging with people, their history and culture. This makes my little African heart happy.

As a Rwandan - this was a good list of don’ts. I recommend as well - don’t forget Rwanda has been around since the 13th century, there is a lot of History outside of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide. Visit the royal palace, Rwandan history museums, and if you’re invited - definitely go to a wedding if you can they last for days and there are many cultural events. Also on our president, it’s important to note that he’s much more respected than leaders in the west primarily because he was instrumental in stopping the Genocide.

I’ve been to Rwanda and it’s one of the best organised countries in the world, very orderly, very clean and very safe. It proves that you can achieve much even with very little. I pray that the country remains a model of good organisation, smart working, respectfulness and decency

It’s sad that you have to remind people to be respectful of places for the dead/memorials :(

As a Rwandaise, there is nothing as uncomfortable as asking someone of their tribe! The world should stop it because Rwandaise chose to drop everything and just be Rwandaise. The world should respect that!
