I hooked up a 9-volt battery to the chime, and it produced a wayyyy wimpy response. Moved about an inch (but it's supposed to jump a lot and hit the metal chime bar). Looked up online how many Watts doorbell transformers are, and someone said 15W = 16V x ?Amps, yields 0.9375A, or nearly an Amp of current. Duhhh, well no wonder then. I figure the 9V produces more in the range of 100 mA (depending on load of course).

Are you running your solenoid off of AC or DC current? A standard residential doorbell has two solenoids to ring the front and back bell, normally run off a 16-volt AC transformer (step-down from house wiring 120 volts). I was thinking of designing a circuit to convert DC to AC (my transformer is dead), but then I thought, "Why shouldn't I be able to run a solenoid straight off of direct current so that I could run it from a battery or a DC wall wart?" I found information online that says you CAN run a solenoid on DC, but it produces more current, which could fry your AC solenoid. I want to run my existing nearly-30-year-old doorbell chime. Any ideas?
