Elixir map syntax clarified (for beginners)

There's one area where I see a lot of beginners frustrated with Elixir syntax. It's not because it's hard, though. It's because there are two ways of doing the same thing and the more general one is less often seen in code!

Map looks ugly to me. Why on earth they used % symbol?

Couldn't they just used {} for both tuples and map? 😭

Crystal lang is so much more elegant than elixir.

I tried learning elixir but everytime, I am put off by the syntax. And why isn't there any inbuilt support for JSON? Why on earth I have convert it into map and then use it?
