Michigan enacted this in the 70s. It dramatically cleaned up all roadsides. Even if someone tossed their beer can out the window (so the cops wouldn't cite them for "open container"), kids would go along and collect for candy money

In Ontario we have this only for alcohol bottles and cans, but in BC they pay for ANY beverage container, so schools and kids sports teams will have "container drives" to raise money! I love that idea 😊

The five cents hasn't changed in decades. It need to be more.

Iowa has been doing this since the 70s. The residents embraced it and returns of bottles and cans is exceptional.

So if most of the proceeds are going to the states general fund the fee is pointless. Environmental initiatives should be used for at minimal 2/3rds to 80 + %if not redeemed via people collecting the fee. I would say 100% but it’s New York a city known for corruption who can never even fix thier subway.

I ask this to myself all the time....Why don't you pay for can collections!? I get someone has to be willing to accept the recycling, and the money has to come from somewhere etc... but sounds like NY has a good program set up! Others should do something similar! The homeless & the addicts would have parks & roadsides cleaned up so quick! Also, stop littering ya slobs! ✌️

In Canada Empty Beer Cane Prize Is 10 Cent And Bottle Prize 20 Cent…

This is an old idea. We used to collect drink bottles in the 50’s for the 2 cent refund

It can be worth the effort. The difference between nothing and enough to buy dinner.

Seems like that percentage split is a bit backwards if ya ask me. Must be NY.

You would think that with the deficit and national debt, every state would have recycling laws.

The only problem with this is that for most people it makes absolutely no sense to participate because 5 cents per bottle is such a low amount

Connecticut started it in the ‘70s too.
Back then, there was no household recycling programs. It made sense back then.
Today, everyone recycles. It’s just hidden tax.

Latinos have been on the green train since the beginning of time. 😂

This sounds like a huge opportunity for a moderately entrepreneurial person. That is a lot of money thrown away.

Yeah I think the only people doing this are those who came here with nothing and have no skills or papers to make money correctly lol, I imagine I'll be blocked from commenting for having an opinion though

We shouldn't be artificially inflating the cost of goods. It also masks the fact that it isn't thermodynamically favorable to recycle certain items.

Such a scam. Only one way to get your money back.
