Pope Francis apologizes to Indigenous groups in Canada

Pope Francis issued a long-awaited apology to Canada's Indigenous people. He called the abuse Indigenous children suffered at schools run by Catholic missionaries "catastrophic." Chris Livesay has more.

My grandmother was put into a Catholic girls school when she was little in Juarez. Completely lost the ability to speak Raramuri. She was ashamed of being indigenous until later in life.

My grandmother grew up on a reservation during the twenties she just passed away on the 18th Of June. And she told me stories about what was done to her and her family. Some savage stuff was going on more than you could know.

It's an admirable act that Pope Francis has done here...
Now The Baptist, Lutherans, Methodists, The US Government, amongst many more groups also need to step-up, follow Pope Francis' lead and apologies for the abhorrent treatment indigenous people suffered at their hands too!

He is great example of how the Catholic Church needs to change and evolve. History will remember him fondly.

Are they kidding with this?! Where is the mention of the unmarked graves of all the little ones they slaughtered? There were over 200 murdered children in a mass grave in the Kamloops boarding school in B.C alone. Where is the apology for that?! And what of the rampant sexual abuse - is that too sensitive a topic for them? I assume he apologized for all of it, but why doesn’t the news cover it instead of only beatings and haircuts? And why wouldn’t the pope also visit and apologize to the indigenous peoples of North America? Someone sanitized the bajeezus out of this story.

Let me know when he comes to the Divided, I mean the United States and apologizes for the exact same thing they did here to the indigenous children. They separated millions of children from their parents here too, sent them to concentration camp schools, cut their hair, took their culture and language, forced them to denounce their religion, and killed many of them just luke they did in Canada and Australia. So please let me know when he goes to the US and Australia to apologize.

Nice of them to say sorry for a genocide? The church has done this all across the world and always to indigenous people. No apology is a excuse or reason for what they did. He does not deserve the headress they gave him. Still sad and never could be forgotten.

Now will the Canadian government apologize for creating and organizing the residential school system and asking the Church to help run them? I wouldn't hold my breath. Pope Francis did the right thing.

It's good that this apology was made by the pope himself. Many catholic youtubers are already trying to spin the narrative and redirect blame away from the church. But the Pope has done the right thing in apologizing and asking for forgiveness. That honest gesture is a step forward to healing for everyone🤗
