The following points may be helpful: 1) Siliciclastic and carbonate sediments and sedimentary rocks are substantially more abundant than chemical sediments and rocks. Volcaniclastic sediments are for the most part not derived from the erosion of older rocks. 2) While it is undoubtedly true that studies of modern sediments and environments inform the interpretation of ancient counterparts, the geological past provides evidence for settings and processes quite different from those of the present day, and for the long-term evolution of the planet. 3) The clip seems to imply, perhaps unintentionally, that composition and texture are enough to interpret sedimentary rocks. That is rarely the case. Sedimentary structures and larger scale layering patterns are also important.
