The Salt is lowering the melting point of the ice to around -9°C instead of 0°C (whatever that is in farenheit) and therefore normal ice becomes colder than 0°C and can freeze the icecream

My elementary school had a science night every year where everyone got to choose five different activities that teachers would host and it was the most bomb thing school has ever produced in my life. One of the teachers did this activity and I remember being mind blown that I literally made ice cream in a bag with no freezer.

Also, I don’t remember the exact science but the salt does make everything get super cold super fast.

The salt does make the ice colder. Fun fact, Gabriel Fahrenheit (the inventor of the Fahrenheit scale and the thermometer) used this combination as a way to make the mercury in the thermometer as cold as possible and labeled it as 0.
