I mean, the Mustang didn’t fit the role anyways, the car is a character in of itself, the Delorean was the most futuristic looking American car at the time, I can’t imagine Doc Brown in anything else, plus Mustangs don’t have the kind of charming but weird quirkiness you’d want a mad scientist’s car to have

There was actually another car with a unique body shape and gull-wing doors that was close to becoming the time machine before they chose the DeLorean. I forgot what it was called, but I remember that it was heavier than the DeLorean and I had a layered nose for impact absorption.

Well, as far as alternatives are concerned, I once saw a scale model of a Lamborghini Countach done up as a BTTF-style time machine, and it looked brilliant.

Also, there were a few gullwing-converted Mitsubishi Starions that would pull off that look too.

I’m a “Ford” guy but agree. Now had the movie used a Bricklin 351w power or a Pantera, again Ford powered, that would have been closer. The choice was right, the Delorean was the only choice.

Mustangs are amazing they are one of my favorite cars but the DeLorean is one of the rarest cars out there today so I'm glad that he said no

Movie was so good, it would've done just as well with a Mustang. But the DeLorean was the much better choice, since Doc was the perfect definition of a mad scientist and the DeLorean fitted his personality perfectly. Buddy of mine had that same Mustang (without those wheels) and damn did we have a blast in it. Sounded like a monster from hell, loved listening to it.
