Vs 1, 5 Behold the cross on which was hung life's very Lord, God's only Son; Mary's own babe, so cold and so still, helpless before her on Calvary hill

Vs. 2 Nails in his hands, nails in his feet, a traitor kiss upon his cheek; and his pierced heart, now broken in two, love crucified for me and for you

Vs. 3 Eyes that won't see, ears that won't hear, lips that deny the friends once so dear; slowly he turns and captures your eye, then passes on to Calv'ry to die.

Vs 4 Behold the cross of Christ in our midst: all those who bear his wounds in their flesh. Suff'ring for crimes of mercy and peace, signs of the kingdom on Calvary street.

Text: Based on the Good Friday Liturgy. Text and music copyright 1986, 1990, Bob Hurd. Published by OCP

This song was sung at my church today during communion. It's such a beautiful song and the lyrics made me tear up. I had to find it on you tube when I got home so I could share it!

Excruciatingly sad, heart rending song that reflects the enormity of Jesus' sacrifice and love for humanity. The Passion was so much worse than anyone today can imagine, read Robert Zugibe to get some idea. Then add to that the mental torture which is often forgotten: knowing beforehand what was going to happen to him in full, the haematidrosis in the garden - a genuine physiological response that only occurs in states of the most extreme stress and anguish - and the awful moment near the end when he cried out to his Father as he felt abandonment we cannot ever imagine and the weight of all the sin man has and ever will commit at once. Combined with the inconveivable physical torture of the preceding hours, this literally caused his heart to fail.

1.
Behold the cross on which was hung
life’s very Lord, God’s only One;
Mary’s own babe, so cold and so still,
helpless before her on Calvary hill.

2.
Nails in his hands, nails in his feet,
a traitor kiss upon his cheek;
and his pierced heart, now broken in two,
love crucified for me and for you.

3.
Eyes that won’t see, ears that won’t hear,
lips that deny the friend once so dear;
slowly he turns and captures your eye,
then passes on to Calv’ry to die.

4.
Behold the cross of Christ in our midst:
all those who bear his wounds in their flesh.
Suff’ring for crimes of mercy and peace,
signs of the kingdom on Calvary street.

5.
Behold the cross on which was hung
life’s very Lord, God’s only One;
Mary’s own babe, so cold and so still,
helpless before her on Calvary hill.
