War often drives innovation, and Ukraine's FrankenSAM air defense system is an incredible example. Originally developed to counter Russian air strikes, FrankenSAM combines Soviet-era launchers with Western missiles, creating a hybrid system that’s impressed the U.S. military. This video dives into the story behind FrankenSAM, its impact on Ukraine’s defense, and why it’s now on the U.S. radar. From modified Soviet BUK launchers to Patriot systems, find out what makes this low-cost, versatile technology so revolutionary.

Ukraine was the beating heart of tech innovation in the former USSR. Many people forget just how inventive and smart they are. God bless Ukraine:)

The article isslightly wrong. Development on the Frankensam started in the late 90's early 2000's in Poland and Chech republic. Both needed an upgrade od air defence systems, so borths worked to use the BUK and KUB launchers and marry them with western missiles. Poland worked on the AAMRAM while the CZechs worked on the sparrow and her derivetive missiles (because there were a lot of those missiles ). This data was used to create the Ukranian FRANKENSAM I have no doubt.

Thank you for this. Ukraine's innovations in association with allies are really amazing and adaptive to their own war. Hey, new and unexpected catches the other out hopefully.

7:14 it's semi-active radar guidance, not laser guidance. And yes, it might be as simple as tuning the soviet radar to use the frequencies that the missile sensor can detect.

Strange that war can be tragic at the same time excellence of technology and innovation

The way that Ukraine has developed drones (basic or expensive) off the shelf drones like DJI or Mavic, through to the use of the Baraktar (from Turkie) is quite impressive. Without a doubt, those Ukrainians are leading the field in actual war experience in the use of drones, and even writing the Playbook on how they can be used best.
Innovation such as 3d printed grenade releases, and other kit to allow the weapon carrying drones to deploy their weapons accurately on target makes this was so interesting! Im sure there are many NATO commanders "crapping their pants" when they see how drones are playing such a pivotal role in the battlespace.

Ukraine is going to become one of the best modern warfare and munitions centers in the world. USA would be wise to stay friends with it imo.

“…or to defend airfields or infrastructure on the US mainland.”

Or spread around various airfields on small islands with airfields in the Pacific.

Bravo, bravo I love technological advancement, especially by those who considered to be the underdog. This is the reason why war is called a theater.

This episode should have come out a week ago right before Halloween, given the name of the subject. 😁

Greetings. We should consider creating a system based on AEGIS (with all sensors and weapons) with a universal launcher like the NASAMS (but which admits anti-ship missiles if necessary).

- A container version for static defense or incorporating them into different platforms: trucks, trains, ships.

- The version for the front line in soft tractors like the D30.

The US did this along time ago using Air to Air Missiles and mounting them on Ground or Sea Base Platforms. They found out no matter how good the seekers are they are very limited do to range. AAM were made to be air launched so they already was up to speed do to the aircraft's speed so their range was fairly good. But on land and sea mounts they have to use up allot of their energy to get up to speed before attacking their target, so low range. These types of weapons can only be used as short or point blank range air defense!

Will Poland now move into Ukraine (preferable with the permission of Ukraine). There is zero chance they will ever tolerate Russia at their borders again (Kaliningrad is undefendable by the Russians)?

Sidewinders were first manufactured in the late 1950s, not the 90s.

Should give it to them with restrictions of when where and how it can be used.
