The Great Lie 1941, Bette Davis, George Brent, Mary Astor, full movie reaction

Hard-partying Sandra (Mary Astor wins Best Supporting Actress Oscar) is a world-renowned concert pianist who marries Peter (George Brent) on a drunken whim. A week into their marriage Peter learns she’s not divorced and they must decide soberly if they want to make it official. Peter’s been off and on for years with Maggie (Bette Davis) who learned of his marriage in the papers. When Sandra makes it clear she chooses her career over Peter he immediately returns to Maggie and the two are married. Sandra and Maggie meet by chance and Sandra says she’s pregnant. Peter has taken a flying job in Brazil and goes missing. Search efforts prove hopeless and the two women travel to the desert alone to await the birth of the baby. Sandra is not mother material and agrees to give her child to Maggie to raise. When Peter miraculously returns single-mother Maggie perpetuates a great lie as to her son's origin, until Sandra also returns to try to work her way back into Peter’s life.
