after 2.5 years in this flat, we’re ready to move on. the flat is gorgeous, we’re super happy in the area which is both residential but still central and lively. we have a park just outside the door and the windows are a dream, with so much natural light all day long. so why move? because we want to get something of our own. finally. we want to pay off our own mortgage,
not somebody else’s. and since we’re such huge design and interior decor lovers, we want to be able to paint, redecorate, choose floors and kitchen cabinets and bathroom tiles. we want to knock down walls if we feel like it and get a sense that our home is actually ours.

so let us walk you through what we like and don’t like about our current place. all the pros and cons of this place and what we’re looking for when we buy.

oooo and don’t forget to take a look at our new channel and give us some love! we’re so excited about this, hope you are too.

where do you live at the moment, do you want to upgrade or downsize?

New Yorker here (hi from Harlem!). This is more a reply to other comments hating on living in the city lol. People always tell me their opinions about living here and my life choices and my preferences. It’s wild. Maybe I prefer to pay for location? Maybe I don’t need the most space for all my useless trinkets and maybe I like having folks living nearby and seeing liveliness outside my window. Maybe I like hopping on the metro a few blocks away and not having a car. Maybe I like the constant reminder that life goes on - loudly and fiercely and brightly and smelly and angrily and joyously - despite how I’m doing at any moment. It reminds me that community and society is important. If you want peace you can find it in the city or anywhere else.

I recently bought a little flat Brighton and people say ‘but don’t you want a second bedroom, don’t you want a bigger garden’ and of course my answer would be yes IF I had the money. Living in the city means I’m not paying for my flat, my paying for the location and I couldn’t be MORE happy than to pay to be in this great city. I think your choice has to be about if your love for the city is enough to give up some of the other things (space for a dog etc) for the time being. A flat in a city can always be rented out to friends if you decide in a few years to head to the country… 😁

Go for the countryside with the 2 rescue dogs!!! You will not regret it! You can always visit the city.

I had an apartment in different big cities, for 3 years, and it was already too much... The rents are expensive, noise all the time (road, crazy neighbors), minimum 20 minutes to reach any shop... In the countryside, I found all the necessary space and tranquility. I can go where I want, never stuck in traffic jams ! The forest is just behind my house. A huge step in my life.

Interesting that everybodys saying that they'd recommend the countryside to you guys. I remember you saying, when you moved from Berlin back to London, that Berlin felt too small for you or something of sorts. I always pictured you more as city-people but i'd love to see what the journey brings. (And lets be real: living 1-2 hrs away from the city is surely not living in the City. How often does one visit, then? Not too much. And if you have Reasons to - like friends etc - one is still often annoyed to have such long travels to see them. This applies even when someone lives in another area of the City, let alone outside...) I'm excited to follow along! :)

I think you should stay in London! Look East around Hackney/London Fields/Victoria Park area. Very green, a bit quieter, but still has the best London has to offer. I’ve lived in the suburbs around London and actively moved into London to get away. There just isn’t enough to see and do outside London and you’ll never visit the city as often as you say you will. You can have the best of both in London, but I don’t think you can outside!

I moved form a hugh city to the suburbs not that long ago and I love it! Now I have access to a garden, have a basement and a parking spot right infront of my house (where nobody but me is allowed to park). The puplic transport is very good, so I can get into the city without any problems to have some drinks with friends but am going to wake up to the sound of birds instead of traffic the next morning. I really enjoy it!

Living on the edge of Paris made me realize even tho I love the city and being 20 min away from my favorite restaurant or from the Louvre was convenient, the noise and constant movement made me feel exhausted sometimes. I moved 1h30min from Paris in a little quiet city, I have the first necessities around and not having a lot restaurants around make me cook more 😊. I’m so happy there it’s so calm and relaxing and I even have I river and green space nearby🌿💚 . You can live on the edge of London more space, calm and less expensive . I think it’s a good balance 🤗

Definitely want to follow along! I left London for the countryside last year with easy access to the city by train and I've been finding it just as convenient as being on the outskirts of London (zone 3) before - even when I lived in London, it took me at least an hour getting to where I wanted to get and that hasn't changed now. The only difference seems to be much more space & quiet now, plus I needed to get a car for groceries - and yes, the train ticket into London is a little more than the simple tube trip used to be, but that's all fine with me 😅

Love that you have invited us along on your relocating adventure. My opinion is go for quality of life as a priority. Nothing is perfect, but look for what brings you pleasure and peace of mind.

When I’m listening to you describe your problems and wishes for a future living space, it sounds like you need a commuter home. It is the best compromise on everything you want: access to the city and nearby activities (not as much as the city, but still more so than the countryside) and would give you a lot of extra room & freedom to do what you want with the space while avoiding the city noise. There are some BEAUTIFUL patches of countryside in England, but if your heart belongs to London, then you will always be a skip, hop, and a jump away by commuter rail.

Suburban life is not as flashy as the city, but you are both grown-ups now with grown-up problems that require grown-up solutions! So happy for y’all’s success. Cheers from Texas :)

From personal experience, I'd say you should stay in London if you can. We just bought a flat (two bedrooms, 78 sq m, a decent sized storage room as well 😍, balcony) near Canada Water (we've lived here for the past 5+ years and love this area) and I'm so happy I never listened to people who keep banging on about countryside. Countryside is good if you want a big and quiet space, family life, a house – not something I've ever been interested in myself. Give me a mid century-looking flat close to city center please with no empty rooms or children or gardens to take care of 😃

As you said, London is home, and the feeling of walking into your own flat here and knowing you are now officially a Londoner – it's magical. Being able to jump in an uber and be in the city within 20 min is magical too. Having an evening walk in beautiful architecture, going to an exhibition on Saturday because 'why not', enjoying cocktails in beautiful restaurants and delicious vegan food everywhere – that's the life ✨

So if you feel like London is home, stay here!

Space, peace and quiet r way more important in the long run for your well-being. Stay away from city. The benefits, in the long run, of peaceful living compared to convenience of a city, is far greater.

Come back inside city once you r real old, n commuting becomes a problem!

So happy that you’ve decided to stay and make London your home. I’m in love with London and I always feel so proud when people say they love it and want to stay. Take a peak at Buckhurst Hill. It’s on the Central line, 30 mins from central and has loads of green space. It’s beautiful!!! X

I have never regretted moving to the countryside. I have always loved living in the city, the nice cafes, stores...After I moved to the country about two years ago for love, I realized that I can be much more "with me" here. I consume less and that feels good.

Have a look at Putney / Barnes / Richmond - south west in general - whilst still expensive (it’s London) you can get a bit more for your money than central and could be a good place to get a small garden for dogs.

I would try living in the other places for a couple of months, maybe renting an Airbnb or something, to see if living in London is really a priority or if any of the other options is better.
