In terms of wholesome animes, I think Takada is the best protagonist. He's not dense, he just don't know given his age which works for the humor. Also, he's vaguely aware that he could like Nishimura

Takada's density is conveyed so very well in this anime. He's not dumb as a rock, it's just that he is too young to comprehend a lot of mature things. It can lead to brilliant scenes like this where he finally understands what going out on a date *_really_* means or even for more comedic moments like him always saving Nishimura from those bullies.

I do like it here because they're both way more young than what we're used to. In Takada's case, he's quite literally growing up throughout the series

This right here is the turning point for Takada. I mean, he'll always be himself, but this where he loses some of that blissful ignorance. Now he's thinking about when he actually asked Nishimura permission for something so personal, just wishing he could take it all back. I bet Nishimura is thinking the same thing. Takada is a flustered little lover-boy and I am here for it!
