In today’s video, I provide an education discussion of the U.S. Barber coinage series. I cover topics including who designed the series, when and where it was minted, as well the 2 varieties of the 1892 quarter and how they came to be. I also share a story about one of the RAREST US COINS in existence: the 1894 s Barber Dime.

I'm enjoying very much this historical look at our coinage. I'm a type coin collector, and have been for 50 years now. I did stop for a while, but now that I'm retired I have the time, I just have to wait for the money to make a purchase.
I'm working on what will probably be my last type set. I'm going for all PCGS, NGC, or ANACS slabs, and they all have to have a straight grade. No details coins. That's causing a real slow down between purchases for me. I've got nice mint state examples for my Barber dime and quarter. I've not added anything that nice for my Barber half dollar yet. My current example is a fine 15, it has very nice eye appeal, I don't recall off the top of my head what it cost, but it wasn't cheap even in a fine.
Right now I have been focusing my expendable cash on adding to my stack during this dip. I know it won't last forever and it's bringing my cost average down.
I've already bought Christmas presents for the family, of course it's going to be silver. Everybody is going to get a sovereign silver from various countries, and a one ounce silver bar. I've been doing something with coins for a few years now, including the kids. No stupid toys that will be broken and discarded. A couple of my nieces like getting coins, so I hope I'm planting seeds that take root.
Kind of difficult to compete with the electronic gizmos.

The Barber coins are beautiful in higher grades. They're fantastic coins and quite fun to collect. I know a lot of different stories about different coins but ones I don't know a lot about are the $2 1/2 and $5 Indians. I'd love to hear some more about them. Thanks, Josh!

nice video. Idea for another video - Some of the key features of currencies - why/when do image appear facing left or right? When/why did presidents appear on currency? What it means when eagle is flying, and what it is carrying, etc etc..

I agree with what Teddy Roosevelt said abut Barber coinage: “I think our coinage is artistically of atrocious hideousness."
