All NEW BYD Seal U DM-i 2024 Electric SUV - Visual REVIEW, PRACTICALITY, exterior & interior
Показать описание
The new BYD Seal U is the Chinese manufacturer's latest addition to its growing lineup in Europe. As a midsize SUV, it enters a highly competitive segment dominated by stalwarts like the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Does the Seal U have what it takes to make a splash?
At first glance, the Seal U's exterior styling comes across as rather generic and evolutionary. That's not necessarily a bad thing in this segment, where mass appeal is key. The front end borrows cues from the Seal sedan with its split headlight design, while the side profile and rear are somewhat nondescript. It should blend right in among its rivals.
Inside, the Seal U impresses more with its minimalist, tech-forward cabin. The huge 15.6-inch central touchscreen is a highlight, able to rotate 90 degrees from landscape to portrait orientation. Material quality appears solid for the class, mixing metals, gloss, and leatherette. Seating space is generous, especially in the rear, benefitting from the 2,765mm wheelbase. Cargo room is merely average though.
Initially arriving as a plug-in hybrid, the Seal U combines a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor. Total output is 300 horsepower and ample torque. Performance seems adequate if not exciting - the sprint to 60mph takes around 8.5 seconds. The fully-electric version coming later may prove sharper. The ride leans more towards comfort than sportiness, with decent body control and accuracy through corners.
With its competitive size and spacious interior, daily practicality should be a strength. Throw in the latest tech features like dual wireless charging and digital displays, and the Seal U checks most of the right boxes. It may not have any standout qualities, but the overall package looks solid.
If BYD can hit the market with keen pricing like its models so far, the Seal U has a shot at luring crossover shoppers. However, it faces an uphill battle versus established segment leaders. Attractive leasing deals could persuade buyers to consider this polished Chinese entrant. We'll have to wait and see if the Seal U makes a big splash or merely causes small ripples.
