Hosting Google Fonts Locally in WordPress can sometimes yield performance gains depending on your region. It also allows you to merge the CSS with a plugin like WordPress rocket, and set expires headers so the browser can cache them for repeat visitors. This plugin makes the process automatic and still works despite not being updated in quite some time!

Even though the plugin looks dated, it works. It makes hosting Google Fonts Locally on existing websites as easy as hitting the save button to enable the functionality. Self Hosting Google Fonts under certain conditions can yield performance gains but more times than not, I personally just host them on Google Servers. Then again, my sites primarily get traffic from the United States where we have Google Servers all over. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!
