Aronofsky originally wanted Harry, Marion, and Tyrone to be way younger than they were written to be in the novel and screenplay. He wanted to change their ages to be around 14 and 16 to really push to show the devastating impact of drugs, and the author and writer even agreed to these changes. It was the producers who believed that this would make the film too horrific to American audiences. The producers stated that the film wouldn’t be shown in theaters with younger characters, and Aronofsky agreed. In fact, one of the actresses was already horrified by the script.Originally, Ellen Burstyn rejected the role, but she changed her mind after watching Aronofsky’s previous film, Pi.

Iv since gotten clean and changed my life. But theres days where the things that happend to me back than still plays in my head.

This film was devastating enough. Had they lowered the ages it would have been banned everywhere. Basically, it would have been Kids (1995) where its hard to locate for those who want to actually see it.

I'm glad they kept it the age they are. I feel the age the are now gives the character weight and understanding of their backstory. That doesn't make with younger characters. It would have been very exploitative. The idea of a 14 year old kid being so addicted to drugs that he has a long history of selling his mom tv for drugs. A lot of the movie wouldn't flow right, it would have been shocking but it wouldn't have made sense considering what this movie is trying to convey.

This is one of my favorite films of all time. I first watched it when I was in high school. At the time I had been taking film classes for about 2 years and I was absolutely blown away by the cinematography. I also had an immense interest in psychology and sociology so this move gave me something that scratched every itch that I was looking for in a film. It’s a devastating film to experience for the first time, but it’s one that I have found myself watching a lot over the past 8 or 9 years since I first saw it. I tend to show it to people close to me and every single one of them has been blown away by this masterpiece of cinema. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s one I recommend especially for people that think they are invincible and are starting to get to the early stages of addiction.

Actually, the same thing happened with Marlon Wayans(Tyrone) when he read the script and the book, but then when he saw Pi, he saw the potential and auditioned.

imagine watching young teenagers inject heroin.
i think i won't have liked that because these kids would go to school. and i prefer something more mature.
and its easier to make a 20 year old that is fully develeoped look more aged and fucked over by drugs.

The age of the characters wasn't mentioned in the novel as I recall. But Marion had her own apartment, so I assumed they were all 18-20.

Feel like it would have been better if they were portrayed as younger, with younger looking actors (who were adults). Would make it even more shocking.
