I did plumbing work for a wealthy guy that lives in maine.

He asked since he was my last call, if i wanted to see something cool.

Guy owned some beach front with cove like terrain features.

He permanently docked some WW2 mine sweeper cruiser.

He showed me the controls to close the gate at the cove entrance, so he could do maintenance.

After WWII, several PT Boats and similar-sized Air Sea rescue boats were sold to private parties. Also, the Yachts of John Wayne (US Navy minesweeper), Aristotle Onassis (Canadian Navy frigate), and Jacque Costeau (Royal Navy minesweeper) were former Navy Ships.

The Wizard, on Deadliest Catch, was built by the U.S. Navy in 1945 as a fuel oil barge designated YO-210 for service during World War II. After the war was over, the oiler boats were only used for practice targets and building Artificial reefs. The Navy sold YO-210 in March 1974. In 1978, John Jorgensen bought the boat. Now it's a crab boat.

I'm an ordinary American citizen. I don't think an ordinary person can afford a US Navy ship. I think I'll stick with my Gundam figures.

Remove or deactivate Weapons is not a Warship anymore just a Ship

The Navy also has other considerations. Assuming the vessel is not sold to an allied country or scuttled for testing and environmental purposes (ie making an artificial reef), they will want to know if the vessel will be preserved or scrapped and the smallest details for both. Each has its advantages. Preservation entails establishing a museum in most cases. As a musuem, the ship is still a representative of the Navy and must be cared for as if it were an active ship. Failure to do so reflects poorly on the Navy and can result in repossession. The Navy can also pull parts from the ship for use in the rest of the fleet, though it is rare they do so. The ship can also be scrapped and broken up. In all cases, the Navy weighs concerns like environmental pros/cons, job creation, tourism, and image promotion. A ship with huge historical significance like the Iowa class battleships is more likely to be preserved than one that doesn't have battle stars, firsts/lasts, or anything that could set it apart. Even with those things, the consideration of safety is top priority. Is it worth piecing the ship back together after it was cut in half to remove a nuclear reactor?

you can buy a patrol boat for an only slightly unreasonable price, they're pretty kick ass boats if all you want to do is go fast but otherwise you basically need to do a full conversion to make them into anything more than very expensive speedboat that has zero comforts built in.

Depending to the size of the ship, you can buy ships much easier if they are not major classes ships, PT boats and navy tugs are quite loosely regulated.

you forgot the other part where there are many countries that want them too. and if they are our friends they get priority.

Well some corporations do buy it, just to tear it apart for its scrap metal. Because the navy ship is usually cheap when for sale since after 20 years or so of operation the ship would cause a lot more problems down the road so the US navy would sell the ship for cheap just not to have to maintain it anymore

first, a lot of those fees and requirements, can be flat out ignored if the ship is being bought as a static piece. For example if you are buying a navy ship as a static display outside a building.

and there are lots of used military boats for sale...

It is for Russia. A Russian Mobster in NY Alan it bought one of their subs. Plus a guy not far from me bought a Mig-29UB back in the 90’s had it disassembled, shipped and reassembled.
