EMERGENCY BIRD BLOOD FEATHER INJURY & WHAT TO DO!

I am NOT an EXPERT, but I have had experience with this issue a ton of times.
The key is to STAY CALM!
Wrap your bird in a towel and keep it secure. You might want to have somebody help you because it's hard to do alone.
Just remember to find the blood source and grab the feather from the base by the follicle and pull straight out with a quick Swift motion.

PUT PRESSURE ON THE WOUND AFTER YOU PULL OUT THE FEATHER TO MAKE SURE IT HAS STOPPED BLEEDING AT THE BASE.
YOU CAN ALSO USE FLOUR OR CORN STARCH TO CLOT THE BLOOD IF IT WON'T STOP. IF THE BLEEDING CONTINUES, GET THE BIRD TO AN EMERGENCY HOSPITAL OR YOUR LOCAL AVIAN VET IMMEDIATELY!

Wow! Sharyn! The stress! I know you have a lot on your plate! That phrase.... It is always something is so true! You were a cool cucumber and you always handle everything great!!! I so enjoy all the informative stuff that you do for everyone, although I don’t have birds! Taking care of anything you love is a full time job! You do it exceptionally well!!!

😯 Whew! I'm so glad you caught that in time. It's awesome that you're educating us! Thank you.
You'll have to get a "clap-on, clap-off" lamp so RJ can mimic clapping and turn the lights on before she takes off!

Thank you so very much for this information. I don't have birds but it's always good to know how to help in case it ever happens.

Very good info. We raised two cockatoo and had a white powder that stopped the bleeding instantly. Thank goodness never had to remove the feather.

You say you aren't an expert but I disagree. You know exactly what to do when it comes to treating and taking care of your birds. Only an expert can have as many birds as you and know what to do.

#6👍Reminds me of my Respiratory Therapy days when an ET tube or trach would malfunction and the patient was vent dependent and turning blue !Dont panic and start Manuelly ventilating the patient ASAP! This RJ scenerio reminded me of that!It certainly is a godsend that you’re already an RN‼️
