Graham Nash (of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) wrote this song in the 70s. Iranian pop star (and drummer) Sharam Shabpareh recorded this cover in Tehran and introduced it to a whole new audience in pre-revolution Iran. Incredibly nostalgic. Shahram has always been cool and a really good guy. National treasure for us ex-pats.

This is why I love Hip Hop. It helps you appreciate all music. I never would have heard this song if it wasn't for Bronson.

Bruh...the sampling of this track for Nas White Label is godamn epic-the horn embellishments make the production on the song elevate on another level. Nas bars are sparse where they need to be, pungent in areas and grotesquely poetic in others. And this song has the potential to be in the elusive radio friendly banger catalogue that Nas has amassed over the years. Tempo is relatable to the masses. His work is usually over most people’s heads-sadly, but this one....overall people will get it and be entertained.

[Verse 1]
One day a friend took me aside, said, "I have to leave ya
For buying something from a friend, they say I've done wrong
For protecting the name of a man, they say I'll have to leave ya
So now that I'm bidding you farewell for much too long"

[Chorus]
And here's a song to sing for every man inside
If he can hear you sing, it's an open door
There's not a rich man there who couldn't pay his way
And buy the freedom that's a high price for the poor

[Post-Chorus]
Kids in Texas smoking grass, ten year sentence comes to pass
"Misdemeanor in Ann Arbor", ask the judges, "Why?"

[Verse 2]
Another friend said to the kid, "I'm gonna have to leave ya
For selling something to the man, guess I did wrong
Know I did the best I could I'm gonna have to leave ya
So now I'm kissing you farewell for much too long"

[Chorus]
And here's a song to sing for every man inside
If he can hear you sing, it's an open door
There's not a rich man there who couldn't pay his way
And buy the freedom that's a high price for the poor
