What Happened to Baptism? | Theocast

The sacrament of baptism was given to us by God as a means of His grace. Baptism is about our union with Christ. It is a sign of being grafted into him in his life, death, and resurrection. It is a sign of the remission of our sins. It is a sign of God's promise to keep us unto salvation. Sadly, this is not how baptism is typically talked about in the church. What happened? Why is it not talked about this way? In today's episode Jon and Justin have a theological, historical, and biblical conversation about baptism as a means of grace.

Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin continue to discuss baptism as a sign of our union with Christ. In particular, the guys consider how pietism, revivalism, and Arminianism have affected how many have understood union with Christ--and thereby, baptism.

So I was baptized first at 11, more out of obligation and legalism I think because i was converted at 14. I was rebaptized in my 20's, actually in an Arminian context - YET it was there that I was actually taught a more sacramental view of baptism/communion than I'd had before. They really focused on union with Christ, forgiveness of sin and new life through Christ, not so much the "decision". I'm grateful. Just thought I'd share my experience.

One other comment... I find it interesting Justin said they do baptisms after communion. From simple Bible reading, it would seem the order is baptism -> communion. I personally think someone should be baptized before they take communion just because of the meaning and significance. Not a huge deal of course, but something to think about maybe!

I wasn’t allowed to get baptized for years because my parents didn’t see enough “fruit in my life”. Talk about turning salvation into a works based gift.

gentlemen, thank you for your discussions; finding the teaching helpful all the time.
QUESTION: I was glad to hear you want to talk about communion. As I’m not yet a member of a church, am I not able to come to the table where I visit? I understand and respect submission to elders, and look forward to that, yet am I not submitting to Christ Jesus ultimately and first by obeying Him in partaking of the Supper? Ready for correction and clarity here… I’m confused, and heavy about it all… wanting to do what’s right, Biblical, and pleasing to The LORD.

Thank you, God bless ya’ll.

Great video, guys! Really clarifies a lot and helps to begin to shake off what some of us that come from pietistic/dispensational churches have been taught incorrectly.

I do have a question. This applies more so for those who believe in baptism by immersion rather than sprinkling. What would you say to someone who is refusing to be baptized because they are terrified of any water that goes above the waist, and understandably even more afraid of going under water?

Baptism in scripture: Matthew 28:19 (“the name”) Mark 16:16-18, Acts 2:38, Acts 8:12, Acts 10:45-48, Acts 19:1-6, Romans 6:3-4, Colossians 2:10-12, Ephesians 4:4-6, 1 Peter 3:20-21
Note: Acts 8, 10 & 19 are actual recorded baptisms that took place. Other scriptures are instructions and insights. This is not an all-inclusive list but should give a student a starting point if genuinely desiring to search the scriptures re: baptism.

Well ….

20min before you even got to any scripture
x1 baptism not x2 :

“one Lord, one faith, one baptism, ”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s just Baptism of the Holy Spirit the one Jesus came to do !!
After johns baptism
Spiritual aka dry …Not wet ie ‘natural’ water baptism
It’s v clear
And you are adding to scripture and adding in works

Signs were for the Jews

You said baptism in one word/ phrase
But then have said this :
A Covenant
sign of union with Christ
A Commandment
sacred ordinance ie
Sacrament
obedience
Grafted into him
Remission of sin ( for forgiveness )

Means of Gods grace
his testimony to us
profession of our faith
Celebration

Roman 6 doesn’t mention water baptism but the baptism of Christ
Ie baptism of the Holy spirit .. which is on belief
You are reading so much into scripture that is not there
Why world he require x2 baptisms of us ? Is he a God of confusion?

Theocast is returning to Romanism. The sign of being a Christian is His Spirit in you. "But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His." (Rom 8:9 NKJ) Sacramentalism is dead, carnal churchianity.
