Barbell squats are not for everyone. If your main goal is to maximize quad growth and you are struggling to squat ass to grass with good form then you should find an exercise that allows for a full range of motion. Enter: smith machine squats. So that you can hit rock bottom, have extra stability and truly push your quads close to their limits.

Barbell squat are good for everyone. But the thing is that we need to aim mobility first, then on the technique or the skill and then strength.

Barbell squats are much better because you stabilize your self instead of a machine doing it for you, which improves your core strength

Ass to grass ain’t for everyone. Everyone is built different .you can still make gain as long as you have good form and know what muscle you focusing in. Ass to grass is more to target glutes at least for me 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m 6’8” with longer legs and I gotta say that barbell squats are just not it. I much rather do bulgarian split-squads or goblet squats with elevated heels

Barbell squats absolutely 100% do NOT need to be ass to grass. Your hip needs to come down to knee level making your thigh/femur run parallel to the floor and that is all that is necessary. If your hip comes any lower without perfect form, you risk all kinds of injury, namely lower back

Reaching till 90° angle is enough going more deep will affect your knee health in the long term

But where to place the legs? Exactly under the bar?

That is not a smith machine.
I do not know the technical term for it.
Smith machines have weird rotating hooks and are fixed on one vertical track.
The machine you are using can move both vertically and horizontally, my college gym had one.

You should have shown side angle like how you showed for the wrong set. 😅

Ehm yeah, but some people have flat feet. Try doing that with flat feet.

It’s literally impossible for me to have the second “correct” motion.

It is less safe for your body to go ATG. Your glutes and quads will develop as good if your glutes are slightly above, parallel to the ground without unnecessary burden on knees.

Hi! I also train my bulgarian squat on these 3d smith machine. But unfortunately, a lot of gym have only a fixed smith machine instead of the more flexible 3d machine. Do you think a fixed smith machine good for squat?

I see a lot of guys only going halfway down with very heavy weight thinking they have achieved that weight. True strength is in depth
