My T56 that I've been into too many time had NO discernable in/out play on the input shaft. I set it up with dial indicators and wiggling crap back and forth to decide what shim to use. I had a single .046" shim in there and using this method I landed at a .057" shim stack. I never had any confidence in my previous method but this is foolproof as you cross the line both ways. Definitely how I'm going to set them up goong forward.

Why does this method work better than targeting a specific spacing (“end play”) such as that in the 2002 t56?
Is this a good practice for all transmissions, or just for the magnum?

I'm guessing this works the same for a t45 since they're very similar
