The caller stated he is from Irish and Scottish descendants. I’m sure some Irish and Scottish people owned slaves. How did African Americans get surnames like Murphy, Collins. McDonald, Frazier, etc.

We thank our veterans for our freedoms. We thank WWII veterans for fighting Nazism, fascism. POWs thank their liberators. Those freed from Nazi war camps thanked their liberators. It's a spirit of rightful gratitude. I do not believe anyone living today was a slave up to the Civil War. We all could & should give thanks for our freedoms.

First and foremost, many white people who owned slaves had ancestry from Scotland and Ireland..
Scottish immigrants were deeply involved in owning slaves.

As matter of fact, we African Americans have a high concentration of European blood, most of that is Scottish...
and you know how that got in there....

And finally, the Civil War wasn't necessarily about 3 in the slaves, as a matter of fact, slaves didn't come into the equation until towards the end of the Civil War. And Abraham Lincoln did not want to do it in the very beginning. The North and the South were radically different. They had so many opposing differences. Slavery was that the very bottom..
